The exhibition BALTIC MULTIVERSE, featuring international artists, dives into the underwater world of the Baltic Sea. Interdisciplinary works spanning sound art, research, nature writing, photo collages, video, and animation merge in this immersive showcase. Curated by Claudia van Hasselt, the exhibition presents research conducted in Ahrenshoop and the Åland Islands, a central autonomous region in the Baltic Sea, as a panoramic experience.

BALTIC MULTIVERSE is part of the multi-part collaboration project “THE Å//A UNIVERSE – hidden songlines of the Baltic Sea”, initiated by Neues Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop, Künstlerhaus Lukas, FrauVonDa//, and the Finnland-Institut in Deutschland. Positioned at the intersection of music, visual arts, and research, the exhibition was curated by Claudia van Hasselt (Curatorial Fellowship at Künstlerhaus Lukas). Realization by Claudia van Hasselt and Nicolas Wiese, produced by FrauVonDa//.
At its core, the exhibition highlights the endangered biodiversity of the Baltic Sea. It unfolds a multi-layered narrative of the Baltic ecosystem within a vibrant Terrapolis (Donna Haraway). The overall project is supported in addition to the regular funding of Neues Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds, the Ahrenshoop Tourism Board, Künstlerhaus Lukas, the Finnland-Institut Berlin, the Finland-Swedish Cultural Fund, and the Berlin Senate’s funding program for Contemporary Music.
Claudia Van Hasselt (*1973) is a voice artist and curator. As a co-initiator of the production collective FrauVonDa//, she develops projects in the context of contemporary experimental music. Her work, based in Berlin, focuses on democratic musical processes.
Nicolas Wiese (*1976) studied communication design, illustration, and communication theory at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. Now based in Berlin, he is an audiovisual artist, designer, and composer of electroacoustic music. He is also a co-initiator of FrauVonDa//.
Ferdinand Breil (*1985) studied composition and music production at the Utrecht School of Arts. Based in Berlin, he specializes in cross-genre and interdisciplinary projects, particularly in dance and theater.
Johan Karrento (*1975) studied film at Stockholm University and the Berlin University of the Arts. A director, screenwriter, and producer based in the Åland Islands, he has created over 50 films in the past 20 years.
Casper Lindroos is an electroacoustic sound artist based in the Åland Islands.
Roman Schöne lives in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and works as a land-art artist in close cooperation with nature.
Michaela Vieser (*1972) studied Japanese studies and Asian art history at SOAS, University of London. A Berlin-based author of narrative non-fiction and radio features, she received the German Prize for Nature Writing in 2021.
Isaac Yuen is a first-generation Canadian from Hong Kong, now based in Berlin. His short stories and essays have been published in literary magazines across the USA, Canada, and the UK, as well as on his blog ekostories.

BALTIC SONGLINES – Concert / Jazzfest Ahrenshoop
At Jazzfest Ahrenshoop, in collaboration with Künstlerhaus Ahrenshoop e.V., FrauVonDa// invites the audience into the underwater world of the Baltic Sea through sound and video. Along the fairways of large ferries, the concert explores the dense algae forests, blending jazz, contemporary music, and traditional songs with shoals of fish. Featuring live electronics, video art, free improvisation, and compositions from Åland, Finland, and Iran, vocal artists Claudia van Hasselt and Golnar Shahyar create an acoustic connection between Darß and the Åland Islands.

MULTITUDE OF VOICES – The Diversity of Environments
This discussion forum, bridging art and science, explores biodiversity in the Baltic Sea’s underwater world. It examines possibilities for a sustainable alliance between humans and the sea, offering new perspectives on social coexistence. The conversation addresses balance, perception, response-ability, and the vital role of diversity, both in artistic and scientific contexts.
